The activists are reading out loud to the chairman of the company board, Horst Schroeter, the findings of a scientific report on dilapida-ted oil pipelines in production areas in West Siberia. The plague of oil in Siberia is a matter of TOTAL indifference to TotalFinaElf ['TotalFinaElf: Ölpest in Sibirien ist uns TOTAL egal'], says a banner. TotalFinaElf draws a large part of its crude oil, which is processed at the Leuna refinery, from West Siberia. The company management has so far ignored the findings of the study, which was carried out by the IWACO institute, and refused to make any statement on them. The attention drawn by TotalFinaElf to a minor research project in the Komi region into possibilities for cleaning up the contaminated land there is to Greenpeace's oil expert Karsten Smid a 'pathetic diversionary manoeuvre'. 'The Samotlor oil field is regarded as an ecological disaster zone', he says. 'So we can't allow ourselves to be fobbed off by cheap projects which are being conducted in areas thousands of miles away and are simply cosmetic.' Up to 500 litres of crude oil flows out of defective pipelines in Siberia every second. An area three times the size of Greater London is now polluted with oil. A study making findings to this effect had been presented by Greenpeace in August last year. It was made by the IWACO institute, which normally works for the oil industry. In its 150 pages it investigated the contamination by oil and made suggestions on how to begin solving the problems involved.Interview: Karsten Smid, Greenpeace Germany oil expert (10:00:35-10:01:14 and 10:03:10-10:03:46), 2nd.
