BUNGE OIL MILL EXAMINATION, MANNHEIM - NEWS ACCESSMannheim, 9-7-2004: Gene detectives from Greenpeace examine lorries carrying soymeal from the Mannheim oil mill to check for genetic engineering (GE). 30 activists ask lorry drivers for delivery notes and samples of their loads of meal in order to have it analysed in laboratories. Climber-activists fix a banner over the exit warning consumers of deception. The reason is that the oil mill operator, BUNGE Deutschland GmbH, is currently processing only soya which is free of genetic engineering, but labelling most of the resultant soymeal as being genetically manipulated. Delivery notes and laboratory tests Greenpeace has already had made testify further to this.It is exemplary of Bunge only to process soya which has not been genetically engineered. But it is misleading and prohibited to label clean soya as GE-soya. In so doing the corporation sabotages a GE-free market for feedstuffs by creating an artificial shortage of goods to the disadvantage of farmers and consumers. Bunge is keeping the price of feed without GE-soya artificially high and turning it into a niche product. Farmers who want GE-free soybeans will be deterred by arbitrarily fixed prices.BUNGE is an international corporation with its head offices in New York. The company supplies soymeal to the feedstuff industry, which processes it for feed for pigs, dairy cows and chickens.Statement: CARMEN ULMEN, Greenpeace Germany genetic engineering expert9 Jul, 2004GreenpeaceDrehorte:MannheimLänge:10m31sParent folder:GE-FREE?
